Notes

While Neon Cactus's debut album performed respectfully and holds up as an audio document, their follow-up EP benefited from a committed (and expanded) roster of band members, and from the production wand of Bret Alexander (Badlees).

"Blaze of Glory" was created as a glimpse into the life and career of auto racer Blaise Alexander who, like Neon Cactus, was originally from Central Pennsylvania. With input and help from Blaise and his family, the band composed songs based on Blaise's invitation. He invited band members to the races, gave them information, access to family photos and videotapes, and shared stories of how he got started racing go-carts and micro-sprints. The CD includes three originals: "Blaze of Glory," the band's country rocking tribute to Blaise; "700 Horses," a fast train beat tune that captures the speed of race day; "NASCAR Curves," a country pop piece about the infield action; and Bob Seger's "Like A Rock," for its Chevrolet associations.

"Blaise was our hometown favorite and a racer who we all believed would run Winston Cup one day," said Mark Tomeo, the band's steel guitarist. "We had hoped the songs from the CD might generate some interest from the NASCAR organization and perhaps get used as theme music during race broadcasts or in advertising. Mostly we were just happy to have caught the moment - the CD has sound clips from a couple of Blaise's races mixed in between the songs." Twenty-five-year-old Blaise Alexander was pronounced dead Oct. 4, 2001 from severe head trauma following a high-speed collision with the outside wall on Turn 4 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concorde, N.C. Battling for the lead with Kerry Earnhardt in the final laps of the ARCA Easy Care 100, Alexander, a professional race car driver on the ARCA and Busch Grand National circuits since 1996, lost control and slammed into the concrete retaining wall.
