From their formation through to the mid-'70s, Tangerine Dream were very much an experimental group, and there is no finer example than Electronic Meditation. The focus is very much on freeform, improvised space-rock - the kind that has become associated with the earliest krautrock works. The two 10 minute+ pieces, Journey Through a Burning Brain and Cold Smoke, are the highlights, each moving from abstract beginnings to pummeling free-rock jams over their run time. The former is rich in shimmering spacey organ, and features some slightly more traditional rock riffing from Froese; the latter is a heady psychedelic jam. The two tracks are bookended by three shorter pieces which are as psychedelic in sound, but would benefit from slightly longer development time. While some of the more sparse moments - particularly drone-led closer Resurrection - hint at the future of the band following the departure of Schulze and Schnitzler, Electronic Meditation stands alone in TD's catalogue as the work of a 'rock group', albeit one who make music largely outside the usual constraints of rock music. It is much more than a curio, however, and is a fine body of work and as good an example of early krautrock as any for those looking to explore beyond the key names of Can, Neu! and Faust.
